Given a hypothetical protocol stack consisting of Application Layer, Network Layer, Data Link Layer, and Physical Layer. Question: Could such a stack ever be functional without the Transport Layer? I.e. is the Transport layer absolutely crucial for data to be passed between end stations or could an application be written to incorporate vital functions of the transport layer? I am thinking it could be done if one were not concerned about reliability, flow control, or sequencing but I am not sure. If it could be done, would there be any advantage of doing so? |
