This is a great article. However, for a "get it all under one roof" solution, I would simply choose Reason. I recently got Reason Adapted (a "light" version of Reason) bundled with my Digi002 and, OMG!

Reason includes great pianos, great synths, and a 3 (!) solutions for drums: DrRex (loops), Redrum (drum machine), and NN19/NN-XT (sampling). On my antique G4 800mhz, it runs great whereas Ableton Live just chokes.

For quick songwriting ideas, I find it to be even faster than my old Triton keyboard - which I sold BTW.

If you're short on money, some people sell their Free Reason Adapted licenses for ~45$ on EBay. Just be sure to read the info on license transfer from Propellerhead's web site. Worth a try.
