With microphone input in the Edirol R-09, can the Audio-Technica AT822 be used successfully without an external preamp?

  It can, but I find a great set-up to be the AT822 > M-Audio DMP3 pre-amp > FMR Really Nice Compressor > Edirol R-09 (line input).
  
  It's worth the extra hardware, and the DMP3 + Really Nice Compressor together will set you back only $350 or so.
