Also, there is already a type of periodical, often on a commercial topic, sometimes commissioned by a commercial sponsor. It's called a newsletter. And there is a venerable tradition of hiring contractors to produce newsletters. The difference is that a blog is published online and updated more often than it's practical to update print. (My first job out of college was editing trade newsletters). - Adina
