I'm a longtime Mac user. I work professionally with Linux/Solaris and as much M$ Windows as I'm unable to avoid.

I bit the bullet and got M$ Office v.X upon release as I receive Office docs from clients whom I simply cannot advise otherwise. I used to be a Word maven, aware of every little obscure key combination. I was one of the few who enjoyed Word 3.0.2 just because there was so much that I could do that I couldn't in 1.05.

I find however, that I've launched Office less than 15 times in the last 6 months. Most needs are met by my email client, my text editor or a PDF reader. Word documents come from those users who haven't yet been shown a more focused alternative.

What if AppleWorks "automatically" used PDF as its native file format? What if users were made aware that these documents could be used on any platform without ANY special considerations? What if someone distributed a cross-platform simple PDF markup application? What if the app could print "marked-up" pages &/or the resultant pages after the markup was applied? What if that took care of most of Word's functionality _as actually used_?

And please name the app "pSmith"... Or perhaps "P.D. WordHouse"?
