I use S**t Talker version 1.2. Though it was originally conceived for making prank phone calls (!), I just use it for the many synthesised high-quality voices availiable. You can select a preset voice and then modify it to make literally thousands of voices! And it's FREE!!! I use Total Recorder to render the voice to a file, since it does not have that capability itself. Works under Windows only. :(

Thanks! The home page is http://www.unaesthetic.net/st/ (there are no asterisks in the actual program name). I love the installer — “Thank you for downloading Sh!t-Talker v1.2 by: jaundice, Ya Creep!”

It’s actually a front end for another program called DocTalker; it works by remotely pasting text from a button into DocTalker and clicking the “Test” button. The buttons sometimes took several presses to work for me, but I found I could also type directly into DocTalker. I wouldn’t call the speech synth realistic, but it has some fantastic cartoony voices, like The Fly and Fast Fred. Great find!

Looks like DocTalker is based on SoftVoice Text2Speech, because the voices are the same. Interesting background here: http://www.text2speech.com
