i ran into this issue just today. i found that using hairline breaks doesn't always work the way you expect it to. instead, i split my shape into multiple, simpler shapes, and put each on a different layer in the movie clip. that seemed to work most consistently (i tried having multiple, different-coloured shapes on a single layer, but that caused some bizarre issues, too).
