Gcj now supports most of AWT (classic - not all of the 2D features or ImageIO, though they are being worked on). It also supports a good chunk of Swing, though a lot is still missing, including most of the text support. Bottom line: at this point many Java GUI programs work fine using Gcj.

  And you can use SWT today if you need GUI. It works very well in the gcj environment.
