While I was testing the cutting edge enterprise CMS systems at Vignette, I thought CMS for the masses would be really cool. Now that we've got blogging software, everyone is creating content. The issue of context is multidimensional. You've hit the nail squarely by identifying the problem of choice-fatigue. The example I give is when I have a choice of 3-7 varieties of olive, I'm good, but when you expand the choice to 200 varieties, my brain cramps and I can't make a good decision.
Back in December, I wrote of context in a different way (google: CxMS and Swedlow -- CxMS = ConteXt Management Systems). The problem of choices in CMS systems is just a glimpse of the larger problem: now that everyone is creating content, how do you make sense of the content overload problem that is happening all over the web.
I'll be speaking in March at SXSW-Interactive in Austin on the panel: Beyond Folksonomies, in large part to address this very issue. Having thought about it for the past 12 months since th '05 SXSW, I've got a couple of notions that I think are worth checking out.
