I must disagree with the idea of applying a drop shadow afterwards to a 3D image. It makes the icon look more like a paper cutout than a three-dimensional object. The shadow should reinforce the shape of the object, as well as the orientation of the surface that it's supposed to be sitting on or hanging from.
