This all depends on the kind of headset you wish to connect. In most cases, a USB headset can simply be plugged into your Mac and, through the Sound Preferences Pane, designated as the sound input source to use.

Some USB headsets may require that you install drivers, in which case downloading them from the manufacturer's website first is a good idea. In most cases this won't be necessary, though.
