MythTV Part 3: Getting Quiet Enough for the Living Room

I have the same motherboard - MSI K8N. Out of the packet this motherboard does not support CoolNQuiet features and the stock CPU fan was noisy. After updating the bios the CPU fan was silent during general usage.

The new bios (cell menu) also has options for undervolting the CPU which helps keep the temperature low. My AMD 2ghz venice core is quite happy undervolted to 1v (down from 1.6 i think) and has been running for months.

Cpudyn also helps run the CPU at half speed and only ramps up the cpu to full when it needs it. By default, commercial detection in mythtv is set as a 'niced' process and cpudyn does not ramp up the cpu for niced processes on default settings.
