I use the intel8x0 driver. The driver detects my chip as an nVidia CK8S. (You're right, though. If I crack the case and look at it, it appears to be an ALC850.) I have my distribution set up to load intel8x0 when the system starts.


For configuration, I'm using the "definitive" asoundrc from http://www.mythtv.info/moin.cgi/DigitalSoundHowTo. It works for me, even though it's described as for the nForce 2/4. In MythTV, I set up "ALSA:default" as the playback device.
