At least 1.4.2_09 on Solaris: thread collisions will force a tweak, then you get into the buffer munches . . . Kudos for offering an OO framework, but past that . . .

  neither does it work on Windows XP running JDK 1.5 update 6. any tweak to get the code work on XP will be greatly appreciated.

  A server based on the code the comes with the article is in production on a Linux machine. We haven't tried Solaris, though.
