Someone spent a lot of time researching the Debian developer community in anthropology terms, probably because Debian's size, maturity, organization, and transparency make it a prime target for analysis. The dissertation has a lot of academic language, of course, but it seemed insightful to me for understanding how open source projects in general work. Although other projects may not have a software freedom culture as ingrained as Debian's.
