Anthing that helps you secure your server is a good thing. Poor security is the no.1 way in which hackers get access to your system - more systems are compromised this way than via unpatched vulnerabilities. But you still can't beat knowledge - try to understand what it does and why. As always it's worth scanning your systems for holes etc after you have secured it just to make sure you haven't missed anything.
