I used Skype from China (Shanghai) from a Dell Axim handheld and it worked great! Turns out if you have an unlocked cell phone, you can buy a local China Telecom SIM card (only good for local calls) for $10 and get WiFi access for less than a penny a minute. SMS China Telecome for a WiFi username and password, then use Skype! Sweet.
