I'm not sure if I share all this optimism about the greatness of VoIP. As someone who used to work at "the" phone company way back when and now works on low-level internet infrastructure, I'm afraid we're going to throw away the baby with the bath water if we all switch to VoIP and let the POTS networks wither.

Ma Bell is reliable but boring as hell. With all the bedrock foundation of central offices and cheap handsets, what have we gotten new in the consumer voice world in the last 30 years? 20 years? 10 years?
I recommend keeping the POTS line to many people. But adding a broadband phone for long distance calls and new phone features will save millions of people money every month. Not a bad deal.
