I must say, I agree with your observation that this is somewhat dissapointing ... If anything I'm "surprised" [sarcasm] at Longhorn's use of OS X-like features.
1. Spotlight-like searching of programs ... OS X uses this feature in the Preferences panel to find programs ...
2. Direct directory access via a drop-down ... a long standing feature in OS X's finder
... just to highlight two ...
As a Wintel and MAC user I guess my real question is, "Where is the new stuff?" ...
Even at a pre-release I don't see much beyond a newer skin for the UI ... some basic re-arranging of common functions ... some better organization/explaination of what/where things are ...
Granted these things may make Windows easier/friendlier to use ... but what about:
- application stability
- security
- better standards for web and file format support
- Where are the "revolutionary" new features that make this worth the upgrade cost, and growing wait for release?
That said I realize this is just a preview and that some of the items I mentioned above are not visible in the few screenshots shown here ... but obviously from the review there was nothing about using the system that warranted "honorable-mention".
While the 3D interface was not shown, similar projects like "Looking Glass" are neat, but do not address the core concerns of users fighting span, spyware, incompatibility and daily reboots ...
Microsoft, you're going to have to do a lot better than this if you want to keep my business!
