does each client need Fibrechannel? If so, that would seem to add a lot to the per-client cost (both in hardware and install). If not, what are the performance implications of going over Ethernet?

You do indeed need to connect each node via fiber channel. It does add some cost but it eliminates the bottleneck of Ethernet. Apple has really begun to commoditize the fiber channel market. The switches and cards have really come down in price. Compared to other shared storage solutions designed for video, Xsan is very cost effective. Hope that helps.
