Try this for your servlet-mapping. There is a small difference. I struggled with this myself for weeks and finally looked at one of the examples and trial and error - - it worked. <web-app> <servlet> <servlet-name>login</servlet-name> <servlet-class>com.onjava.login</servlet-class> </servlet> <servlet-mapping> <servlet-name>login</servlet-name> <url-pattern>/servlet/com.onjava.login</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> </web-app>

  It worked..Thanks a lot...I had a doubt on absence of server mapping the moment I saw the xml file...but your help confirmed my doubt..I think Oreilly guys must make this correction in the tutorial
