Yes, 8 oz really is an issue. Not only do we get a lighter laptop, but a smaller (and therefore lighter) bag as well. As someone who used to own one-spindle laptops (Toshiba Portege, IBM X21) I can tell you from real experience that the travel weight (the bag on my shoulder) weighed a lot less when I was carrying a 3lb laptop than it does now with my 4.6lb 12" PowerBook. I'd trade the optical drive in a heartbeat to get that lighter carry weight back.
