One feature I use is Gmail's RSS feed: https://gmail.google.com/gmail/feed/atom. You'll need to authenticate, of course. A downside is that my news aggregator, NetNewsWire, can't quite support the client Javascript and XMLHttpRequest Gmail uses in the browser. But it's how I get notified that I have new mail.
