I use the star feature of Gmail to flag messages for response. For example...my buddy sends me a question. I have to research the answer or just don't have time to respond, so I star it. When I look at my Gmail at a later time, the starred mail is easily accessible. Kinda like prioritizing mail. It works out pretty well for me. I think that I might get more use out of that feature than actually searching for mail. (At least, thus far.)
