The Ctrl-Click "edit in external editor" appears to be broken. There's a report on MacFixIt also, confirming this problem.


In the meantime, you'll have to get by with double-clicking on the thumbnail to open in an external editor. If you want to edit in iPhoto 5, no need to change your prefs, just click once on the thumbnail to highlight it, then click the "Edit" button at the bottom of the window.
