I'm forced to use iTunes to manage my music as I have an iPod. I agree that it does a very good job of that. However, I don't like it as a general purpose media player. It doesn't handle M3U files correctly, in that it will play the first track on the list, but ignore the rest. Also, it is so library-centric that if you play an MP3 file to listen to it once, unless you're careful it will automatically get added to your library and sync'ed to your iPod.... |

If you want to listen to an audio file without having it added to your library, you'd be best served by listening to it in QuickTime. I have QuickTime set as the handler for my audio files and if I want to add something to my library, I'll drag it to the iTunes icon in my Dock.
