I'm forced to use iTunes to manage my music as I have an iPod. I agree that it does a very good job of that.
However, I don't like it as a general purpose media player. It doesn't handle M3U files correctly, in that it will play the first track on the list, but ignore the rest. Also, it is so library-centric that if you play an MP3 file to listen to it once, unless you're careful it will automatically get added to your library and sync'ed to your iPod....

    If you want to listen to an audio file without having it added to your library, you'd be best served by listening to it in QuickTime. I have QuickTime set as the handler for my audio files and if I want to add something to my library, I'll drag it to the iTunes icon in my Dock.
