What I have found is that if you work with tip 4 - that being manually manage songs on ipod - you can then do tip 3 - play ipod music - using itunes. I used to do this when working night shift. I would take my ipod, hook it up to the work computer and listen to my playlists on the ipod from itunes on a different computer.
You may need to set up each computer's itunes to manually manage songs, but, believe me, it works without the need to download (yet) another piece of software.
