While this isn't a universally ussable app, or have an API to go along with it, the new version of Deep Prose Software's Booxter (now at 1.5) can use the iSight as a barcode reader for books. Now it is only a matter of time before someone takes this idea and makes a program that can do this anywhere in the OS.
