Industrial-Strength Webcasting with mod_mp3

I installed mod_mp3 and tried to point it to a music directory on my firewire hard drive, but when I try to play the stream it gives me a permission denied on all the files in the directory. The /Volumes/Maxtor HD drive has read access to all. Is it the space in the volume name it doesn't like? Or must the volume be owned by root? I chowned it a while back to be owned by my admin user.
mod_mp3 works fine when it points to a directory on my main hard drive (created by root).
