This is an excellent article, but I'm puzzled why the author didn't use/modify one of the many existing free/open-source mailing list programs such as GNU Mailman.

  Howdy -- the author here. I had enough particular needs that I decided to see how difficult it would be to write it from scratch and integrate it with Movable Type's posting system.
