Martin Fowler did NOT coin the term "refactoring". If you'll read chapter 13 of his book, you'll see that he was introduced to William Opdyke refactoring research in '92, who had been researching it for his doctoral dissertation with Ralph Johnson going back to '89. Even then Opdyke says the idea already existed within the Smalltalk community. I'm not certain who coined the term, but it is much older that Fowler's book. Fowler should be credited with doing a great job cataloging various refactorings and popularizing the concept, but he didn't invent it. |
