I'm experiencing the same issues with OS X Panther. What I do remember checking off during the software install was to have OS 9 drivers loaded during install. But before that... I have to slave the HD to a Windows PC in order to recover the data. Thanks to MacDrive software, the PC was able to recognize and recover the data. I will try to reformat the drives (with Windows PC assistance if necessary). Then avoid the perpetual beachball.
