As of rsync 2.6, ssh is the default remote shell so you no longer need to specify -e ssh.

I am terribly sorry. I overlooked the release note of 2.6.0 which clearly stated

      "Rsync 2.6.0 released

      January 1st, 2004

Two important things to note in the new release:

      1. The default remote shell is now "ssh" unless you tell configure you want to make something else the default."
