Introducing the Xircom 802.11 Module for the Visor
Subject:   This is how to set Static IP on SWE

I've been fooling around with the unit to review it for my university and I had a great deal of trouble getting it to work. In my trials and errors, I found that to set for static IP, you have to set it up under your Network preferences. Click "Details," uncheck "Automatic" and voila, you can type in your Static IP. You can also assign the DNS servers directly.

So what eventually happened with my unit? The problem was actually very simple (but very strange). After wiping out all the SWE preferences to start from scratch, all I had to do was disable the PowerManagement (after setting SSID), and then it worked...

I am a happy camper, but $299 is too expensive for students.

  • Any success with peer to peer (ad-hoc) mode?

I have been trying to make the Xircom module work in "peer to peer" mode using a D-Link pc card at my laptop's end.
I managed to make the Xircom module exchange packets with the D-Link DWL-120, but my intention was to communicate something of meaning between the devices. I tried to HotSync wirelessly - to no avail. I also tried to ping the laptop from the Visor with a ping utility I’ve located and downloaded - again with no success. I talked to a tech-support rep from Xircom and found out that I need a software patch. I’ve installed it but it still doesn’t work. Has anyone been succesful in operating the Xircom in this mode?

Wender, Thanks for providing that information -- it is very helpful and will save others lots of time (myself included!).
