Despite the drawbacks of Basic, it's still a good language for learning. Alternately, I'd start with Cocoa & Objective C. Have him build a user interface in IB and then look at the code it generates and start adding to it.

  I think a great way to learn languages is to play on http://www.topcoder.com. You will not learn design but you will be able to write and think about the language quickly.
