The notion of scalability is not a legacy hold-over from centralized servers. Rather, the client-server community adopted the term after it had seen long use in the MPP/SMP user community. Distributed, decentralized systems are much more like MPP applications than desktop
or client/server apps, and all the scalability considerations which applied in the MPP world apply to p2p distributed apps.


Certainly I agree that it is absurd to demand scalability in the design of systems which are designed to remain small forever. But such systems are few and far between -- everybody wants to be a rockstar these days.
