Carbon apps like the Finder and BBEdit integrate nicely with Mac OS X. The 'problem' with AppleWorks has nothing to do with the (misleading) Cocoa vs Carbon debate. It's simply that the features you note have not (yet?) been implemented in AppleWorks. There's no technical reason why they can't be either.
