Funny you should mention perl in a post where you name performance a virtue. For the mission-/performance-critical applications, there's no excuse not to write them in C anyways (no, being lazy doesn't count). On a sidenote, any aspiring programmer should learn the mother of all programminglanguages. For tearing down language barriers it is unsurpassed, and for speed, performance and possibilities it meets its match only in the troublesome assembler code. Oh, and incidentally, there's quite a few buckets of free C-code around as well, including a dozen or so operating systems (which I don't think will be rewritten in perl any time soon).
