It seems to me that bytecode manipulation is mostly the side effect of the Java language fundamental deficiencies. Because a lot of things cannot be achieved through the language itself, people start to hack the JVM bytecode itself... very sad.

  perhaps you could be more specific as to which deficiencies BCEL points to, since the mere fact that you can modify code on the fly point's to java's flexibility rather than any deficiceny
