Some of the replies here that claim PHP can scale as well as J2EE seem to be a bit peeved about not getting paid as much as J2EE consultants. Do employers think that J2EE is a more complicated technology that deserves better pay rates? Or is it just a matter of supply and demand - ie too many PHP developers that can do a decent job on simple websites, and not many J2EE people who are needed for projects claim to require (legitimately or not) scalability and reliability?

  Although both probably play a factor, think it's mostly to do with Java's having the biggest IT heavyweights pushing it. When was the last time you saw PHP getting serious marketting? Plus PHP has the whole Open Source stigma attached.
