Remember that if you do download your images via a connection with the camera, a handy utility that I use is Apple's Image Capture app that comes with OS X. Just plug in your camera, open image capture, and select the "Download Some" button. Now you can preview all of the images on the camera before you download them. You can also select the photos you want to download and the folder you want them moved to. In the preferences menu you can also designate which program opens when you connect your camera.
