Just to counterpoint, I think this hack is quite cool. Sure, it's simple. But that's the point. Now I just need to port it to perl so I don't have to have php installed locally. ;)

    alias calc "perl -le 'print \!:1'"

      Shouldn't it be
      alias calc "perl -le 'print \!*'"
