The problem is not with Hewlett-Packard, the problem exists with Apple. Apple's inability to create an operating system that does not have to be updated with major changes every 3 weeks causes companies like Hewlett-Packard to have to continue to update their software to please the ever demanding Macintosh user.

Hewlett-Packard has failed to deliver the driver but due to the constant change of the Macintosh system has been forced to develop newer software for all of the supported Macintosh products. I deal with Macintosh systems on a regular basis and because of the product support I will never purchase a Macintosh for use in the real world. The constant updating of the Macintosh OS causes hardware vendors to search for information on the newest OS to make the drivers for there hardware is available. As a Mac user the dumbest move is to update the operating system without the driver being available. Hewlett-Packards failure to produce a driver could easily be blame on the 100 dollar product instead of putting the blame on the more expensive Macintosh computer.

Hewlett-Packard's constant delay of the driver for the Scanjet 4400 should be addressed but the real issue is with the instable Macintosh OS 10 that has changed enough time to deter any company from producing any hardware for the Macintosh system.

Ok, lets be honest at least. OS X IS updated on a regular basis.

That said, your point is way off. OS X is not updated anymore than any major OS today. The updates are small updates as well. Taken a look at at the windows update list these days? Mostly security patches but core files are being updated.

OS X is based on a well known set of code and a standard driver model has been in place for some time. USB is also a standard. The problem is HP releasing a scanner and selling to both the Mac and Windows market as a USB Scanner. my understanding is that it is a parallel-port scanner internally, with an internal USB-parallel converter. Hence the issue with OS X USB. Cost of the scanner is not an issue.

Oh yeah, other scanners, from HP and other companies, manage to stay up-to-date, so it must be possible. Using your argument, all HP products should be lacking drivers but that is not the case. Even HP thought they could have drivers by 9/02. That was the original release date posted on the HP site. Then 11/02, then first QTR of 03. Only 3 scanners on the list still do not support OS 10.2.3-10.2.6, the 4400, 5300, and 6300. Of those, all are supported on 10.1.3-10.1.5 except the 4400. It is the ONLY ONE with NO OS X Support. That is HP, but your email shows your position before you even type.

All operating systems require updating so the suggestion that Apple are in some way different from other Manufacturers is unfair. I think your email address may suggest a bias in your views. It is not unreasonable to assume that peripheral manufacturers would support common operaring systems.

None of what you said makes any sense at all. Pure fiction.
