The problem I've found is not storing or even searching on various unrelated bits of data, it's building complex relationships between what would at first appear unrelated bits and pieces. I think six-degrees (http://www2.creo.com/sixdegrees/) really tries to set about solving the hard problem. It seems like some hybrid of SharedSpace, NoteBook and 6-degrees would be ideal.
