same problem for me...i checked the error log and it says, "[Wed Jul 16 08:44:08 2003] [alert] [client 127.0.0.1] /Library/WebServer/Documents/.htaccess: AuthName takes one argument, The authentication realm (e.g. "Members Only")...

  i had the same problem - i'd created the .htaccess file lazily, by pasting from the webpage into bbedit... :)
  
  my fix was to ensure that the file was saved with unix line endings, and to "zap gremlins" in bbedit (i.e. delete non-ascii characters, control characters, null characters / filter line feeds).
