My apologies - an alert reader found a typo in sip.conf. Under each SIP peer, the mailbox= lines are incorrect. They should be equal to the extensions. In other words: mailbox=2000 and mailbox=2001 instead of their shown values.
This typo would have prevented your SIP client (if so enabled) from displaying the message waiting lamp or stutter dialtone.
