Many devices and applications, though still not enough of them, now run their own "mini web server" that presents a remote administration interface that admins can access from any web browser - recent HP LaserJet printers come to mind as an example.

Yes, we definitely need to get from HTML to XML. In the end, that's the heart of web services. Not SOAP or UDDI and all that. Just some form of structured data at a consistent address or port, so that we don't have to fake it by parsing the HTML and extracting the bits we need.
