I'd say a good rule of thumb is not to steal ideas... Remeber the Sherlock/Watson thing? FontBook looks pretty familar. I realize that no matter what Apple makes it will step on toes, but they at least bought SoundJam when they made iTunes. Making Web Kit easy to use in Cocoa apps was a really good move too... Can't wait for the new version of NetNewsWire.
