The thing I like most is that mplayer / mencoder have so many feature. Almost always I know when someone comes to me with a new win32 program with feature x that it is likely that mplayer/mencoder has that feature x. If you wish to replace your desktop linux with ms-windows for instance you would need more then 10 programs alone to replace mplayer and mencoder. And still you would be lacking. Try converting a realmedia .rm file to mpeg-4 file under ms-windows. ;)
