In the Finder, you can navigate to any hidden directory by using the "Go to Folder..." menu command in the "Go" menu. For instance, to look at /tmp/ (which I do frequently), just type /tmp/ in the "Go to Folder" pop-up sheet. You'll see its contents in a regular Finder window.
